Come on and get the minimum!
If you have somehow been unfortunate enough to miss the phenomenon that is Brian Burton (a.k.a. Danger Mouse, of Gray Album fame), now is a great time to jump on the bandwagon. You may also be familiar with one Mr. James Mercer, from a little band known as The Shins (of college makeout session fame.) If so, you already know 50% of the dynamic duo formed by Mr. Mercer and Mr. Burton, known ever so duo-syllabically as Broken Bells.
Their song “The High Road” is pretty darned good, if you want my opinion. (Which you must, else why would you be reading this?)
Our journey begins with what sounds like the siren song from a lovechild of a speak and spell and a wind chime. Then some singing which makes me wish I was as cool as James Mercer. And theeeennnnn?
“Come on and get the minimum”
That extra octave makes a world of difference. Goosebumps difference. Song stuck in head difference. You’ll have to listen for yourself to see what the fuss is all about, but if you are a fan of music with folk overtones, great vocal melodies, understated instrumentation, and expert production quality, you will surely not be disappointed.
For me, this tune definitely showcases another side of the incontrovertibly diverse Brian Burton, and a more mature and slightly edgier Mercer. All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable three minutes and fifty two seconds of sonida buena. Enjoy!
